MEWP & Cherry Picker Inspections

Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (cherry pickers, scissor lifts, boom lifts) lift people, which puts them on LOLER's stricter 6-month examination cycle. We examine MEWPs across Leicester, the East Midlands and nationwide, with digital certificates through our customer portal.

The legal position

Which regulations apply?

MEWPs are lifting equipment used to lift people, so under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) they must be thoroughly examined at least every 6 months, twice as often as general lifting equipment.

As self-propelled work equipment, MEWPs also fall under PUWER 1998 for their drive systems, controls and guards, and operators must be trained and familiarised on the specific machine type.

Independent by design: we examine equipment. We don’t sell, hire or repair it. Our only interest is whether your equipment is safe and compliant.

What we examine

What the thorough examination covers

  • Boom or scissor structure: cracks, wear and deformation
  • Platform, guardrails, gates and harness anchor points
  • Hydraulic cylinders, hoses and slew systems
  • Outriggers, stabilisers and level sensors
  • Emergency descent and ground controls
  • Safe working load and platform capacity markings
  • Drive, braking and tilt alarm systems

Every examination is reported digitally through the Fox Engineering customer portal: defects, actions required, and the date your next examination is due, audit-ready at any time.

Common questions

MEWP & Cherry Picker Inspections FAQs

Why is the MEWP interval 6 months rather than 12?

LOLER sets a stricter maximum interval for lifting equipment used to lift people: a failure with someone in the basket has far higher consequences, so thorough examinations are required at least every 6 months.

Does a hired cherry picker need its own examination?

The machine must have a current Report of Thorough Examination whoever owns it. For short-term hires the hirer normally provides this. Always check the report date before use.

Is a pre-use check enough between examinations?

No: daily pre-use checks by the operator are expected in addition to, not instead of, the statutory 6-monthly thorough examination by a competent person.

Need a MEWP thorough examination?

Based in Leicester, covering the Midlands and surrounding counties, and nationwide when required. Tell us what you run and we'll confirm what needs examining and when.
