The legal position

Which regulations apply?

Cranes are lifting equipment under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER): they must be thoroughly examined at statutory intervals, after installation or reassembly at a new location, and after any exceptional circumstance that could affect safety.

The lifting accessories used with the crane (chains, slings, hooks, shackles, lifting beams) carry their own, shorter 6-month examination interval, so a crane and its tackle are usually on two different clocks.

Independent by design: we examine equipment. We don’t sell, hire or repair it. Our only interest is whether your equipment is safe and compliant.

What we examine

What the thorough examination covers

  • Structural members, welds, runway beams and end stops
  • Hoist mechanism, wire ropes or chains: wear, corrosion and deformation
  • Hook condition, safety catches and swivels
  • Limit switches, brakes and controls
  • Safe working load markings and load testing where required
  • Electrical supply systems, festoons and pendants
  • Associated lifting accessories (slings, shackles, beams)

Every examination is reported digitally through the Fox Engineering customer portal: defects, actions required, and the date your next examination is due, audit-ready at any time.
