Vehicle Lift & Ramp Inspections

Two-post lifts, four-post lifts, scissor lifts and inspection ramps are lifting equipment under LOLER 1998, and because technicians work beneath raised vehicles, HSE guidance recommends thorough examinations at least every 6 months. We keep garages and workshops across Leicester and the East Midlands compliant.

The legal position

Which regulations apply?

Vehicle lifts and ramps used in garages and workshops are lifting equipment under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), so they must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at statutory intervals.

Because people routinely work under the raised load, HSE guidance for the motor vehicle repair industry recommends examining vehicle lifts at least every 6 months, the same footing as people-lifting equipment, not the general 12-month interval.

Why vehicle ramps should be inspected under LOLER - our guide →

Independent by design: we examine equipment. We don’t sell, hire or repair it. Our only interest is whether your equipment is safe and compliant.

What we examine

What the thorough examination covers

  • Posts, arms, pads and locking mechanisms
  • Hydraulic rams, hoses and synchronisation
  • Chains, cables and safety latches: wear and stretch
  • Limit switches and overload protection
  • Safe working load markings and capacity plates
  • Anchor bolts, baseplates and floor fixing condition
  • Controls, dead-man functions and emergency stops

Every examination is reported digitally through the Fox Engineering customer portal: defects, actions required, and the date your next examination is due, audit-ready at any time.

Common questions

Vehicle Lift & Ramp Inspections FAQs

My lift was serviced recently. Do I still need a LOLER examination?

Yes. Servicing and maintenance are not thorough examinations. LOLER requires an independent statutory examination by a competent person, recorded in a Report of Thorough Examination.

Does this apply to a small MOT bay or single-ramp garage?

Yes, LOLER applies wherever lifting equipment is used at work, regardless of business size. One ramp in a single-bay workshop carries the same duties as a ten-bay dealership.

What happens if the lift fails its examination?

The report will identify defects and required actions. Where a defect is a danger to persons, the lift must come out of service until it is repaired and safe.

Need your vehicle lifts examined?

Based in Leicester, covering the Midlands and surrounding counties, and nationwide when required. Tell us what you run and we'll confirm what needs examining and when.
