1 · Know your equipment

Every item of lifting equipment is listed in an asset register (make, model, serial number, location)
Lifting accessories (slings, chains, hooks, shackles, eyebolts) are on the register too
Each item is marked with its safe working load (SWL)
Equipment used to lift people is identified separately (it carries stricter duties)
Hired and borrowed equipment is included, with responsibility for examination agreed in writing

2 · Examination intervals

Lifting accessories: thorough examination at least every 6 months
Equipment lifting people: thorough examination at least every 6 months
All other lifting equipment: thorough examination at least every 12 months
Vehicle lifts: examined at least every 6 months in line with HSE guidance
Any written scheme of examination intervals are being followed where one exists
Extra examinations arranged after damage, modification, overload or long periods out of use

3 · Reports and records

A current Report of Thorough Examination (RoTE) exists for every item in service
Reports are stored where they can be produced for an inspector or auditor
Defects marked as a danger to persons resulted in the equipment being taken out of service
Actions and timescales stated in reports have been completed and evidenced
The next examination due date for every item is diarised, with a reminder before it lapses

4 · People and planning

A competent person carries out the thorough examinations
Operators complete daily pre-use checks in addition to statutory examinations
Lifting operations are planned, supervised and carried out safely (LOLER Regulation 8)
Someone in the business owns compliance: they know what is due and when
